Celebrity Silhouette vs Celebrity Millennium: Which is Best?
For those who have read numerous articles on this website or who have watched videos over on the CruiseHols YouTube channel, you will know that the Celebrity cruise line is one of the go-to lines for me and my wife.
That means I have sailed on a few different ships of their including onboard the Silhouette and the Millennium.
Aside from their exploration ships, the Millennium is the smallest ship in Celebrity fleet whilst the Silhouette is a medium sized ship for them, with the Millennium been 91,000GT and the Silhouette been 122,000GT.
Aside from the size, the ships are completely different and have their plusses and minuses, but which is the best?
That is just what I look at in this list where I compare the two ships in the most important categories of a cruise ship including the onboard experience, what’s included, the entertainment onboard, your accommodation on the ship and the food and drink offered.
With both ships been from the same line, it really will come down to the ship as to which is the best in the battle of the Celebrity Silhouette vs Celebrity Millennium.
Silhouette vs Millennium
With both been Celebrity cruise ships, the onboard experience is quite similar as they both are laid back, both offer the chance to be as busy or as sedentary as you want to be, but the biggest difference is that the Silhouette offers much more variety.
Both ships offered everything you would expect from a Celebrity cruise ship including an impressive theatre, plenty of places to sit and enjoy musicians, good food and lots of activities but the size and age of the Millennium does limit what can be done and if you have a few days at sea, you do get in a bit of a repetitive loop.
On the Silhouette, there were no such concerns as it has many more venues and a wide variety of activities, hosting around the ship.
The top deck lawn club areas and seating down the sides of the ships, really make for great places to enjoy the sun if you prefer not to lounge around the pool.
The staff onboard both ships were all friendly, courteous and professional and made our adventures on the ships that bit more special.
Winner: As mentioned, there are far more similarities between the two ships than there are differences, but the win has to go to the Silhouette as whilst I am not looking for an all-action getaway when on holiday, I do like to keep busy and there were just more options for that on the bigger ship.
If you want lots of variety in the buffet, you get that on both ships, if you want high quality meals in the MDR, you get that in both ships and if you want a range of bars offering alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, you get that as well.
Then you have the Café al Bacio on both ships which offers decent speciality teas and coffees and lots of included food options.
For those who entertainment is the key part of a cruise experience, you won’t be disappointed on either ship as both offers lots of that including production shows, guest performers, musicians and lots of games and activities.
Both have swimming pools, both inside and outside and both have plenty of places to just sit and relax as well as lots of other things that go into a cruise ship, if you don’t want to pay extra once onboard, you really don’t need to splash out on either ship.
The difference between the two comes down to the fine margins, with the Silhouette offering the lawn club and things such as rocking chairs on the top deck, great spaces such as the library and extra entertainment areas such as Celebrity Central, the Entertainment Court and Quasar.
Winner: With a few extra things included, and more of the same things, we can only give the win to the Silhouette for this category.
On both ships you will get lots of entertainment, throughout the day and well into the early hours including productions shows, guest entertainers, singers, musicians, game shows and activities from the entertainment staff.
On the Silhouette, so much of this is more in the open with the atrium, Celebrity Central, theatre and Entertainment Court, whilst on the Millennium, more of it is in bars and lounges.
That does happen on the Silhouette of course, but there is lots more that you can enjoy just by sitting and relaxing or you can take in a couple of songs before heading for a meal or a show.
Winner: Once again, there was just a bit more variety on the Silhouette so we are going to have to give them the win but in all honesty, it is just so close that this wouldn’t impact our decision to sail on either ship.
This is the toughest one to compare for the purposes of this article as I stayed in a balcony cabin onboard the silhouette and an inside cabin on the Millennium.
I won’t therefore hold the smaller cabin and lack of outside space against the Millennium and will just try to the main things that make up all rooms onboard.
To start with, the bed in Celebrity cabins has to be the comfiest at sea, so no matter what type of cabin you are in, you should get a great night’s sleep.
Both rooms had plenty of storage space for your clothes and other bits and bats and just about enough sockets and usb ports for charging things.
Both bathrooms were of a decent size, with both having that all important glass shower door, so the only real difference comes down to the small things.
Winner: That is where the Silhouette once again comes out on top as we had no issues at all with our cabin whilst on the Millennium, our room was showing its age in a few places including the shower door that kept swinging open in the middle of the night which woke us up a couple of times with a startling bang.
The food and drink offerings on Celebrity ships tend to be quite standard across the fleet, so if you liked the food in the MDR on one ship, you would likely like it on another ship.
The same can be said across most other dining places such as the buffet as well as drinking spots such as bars and cafes.
With Celebrity been one of my favourite lines, it will perhaps be not too surprising that I enjoy the food onboard their ships and find the quality in the buffet and the MDR’s to be of a high standard.
With so much similar, or even identical, this one really does come down to the specifics of the ships themselves.
On the Millennium there is a lot less choice in the buffet and for speciality dining options but that is some ways is to their benefit as we ran into some issues on the Silhouette.
We had a poor experience at the steakhouse on the Silhouette and some of the dishes in the MDR were the worse we have had on any of the fleet.
Winner: That could have been down to timing as it was soon after the shutdown we sailed on it, but I can only judge by the experience I had and for this one, I am going to give the win the Millennium as the food was much more consistent across the board.
So, over all the Silhouette picks up the win with 4 points to the Millenniums 1 and that isn’t too surprising as the Celebrity Silhouette is one of my favourite cruise ships but hopefully it has come across just how close things are in the majority of categories, so my recommendation would be to not worry about sailing on either ship.
Winner: Celebrity Silhouette
