Gijon Cruise Holiday Guide

Gijon, Spain

Gijon, pronounced in English as something similar to hee-HOHN, is a beautiful port city on the north-west coast of Spain in the famous bay of Biscay.

That makes it a popular port of call for cruises to the Iberian Peninsula, to the Canary Islands and for cruise itineraries heading to the Med, so it will come as no surprise that the port is one of the most well serviced from the leading UK ports.

That means there is lots of choice for holidaymakers looking to visit one of Spain’s biggest cities, which in our view is a great thing as the city is well worth visiting.

Cruises To Gijon

Gijon Cruise Guide

Here at CruiseHols, we are cruisers ourselves so we know just what information those visiting the city on a cruise needs to know.

If you have already booked a cruise that includes a stop in the city as part of its itinerary, our guides makes it easy to really make the most of your time onshore whilst if you are still researching whether a cruise to Gijon is right for you, our guide helps to make the decision as simple as possible.

Type of Cruises Available

When it comes to choosing your next cruise to the port, the good news is that there is lots of choice, although that can sometimes add to any confusion you may have in picking an itinerary.

Many of the cruises that call into the popular north Spanish destination are on round trip itineraries from the United Kingdom to regions such as the Canary Islands, the Western Mediterranean and cruises of the Iberian Peninsula but there are also a number of options for those wanting to spend more time in the region.

If you don’t mind flying, you can also start your cruise in a port such as Barcelona or Rome in the Med and take a repositioning cruise back to the UK or Northern Europe or you can sometimes choose a cruise heading across the Atlantic that calls into the port before or after its crossing.

Gijon Cruise Port Location

The Puerto Deportivo de Gijon, or the Gijon port is centrally located in the city and just a short walk from the main city centre but unfortunately the new cruise pier in the city is located across the sheltered bay from the main port and a short bus ride is needed to get to the towns promenade.

A number of the cities main beaches, including Playa de Poniente and Playa de San Lorenzo, are easily reached on foot from the drop off point.

Gijon Attractions

If the sun is shining, arguably the best place to head is the beautiful sandy beach at Playa de San Lorenzo which is one of the city’s largest and most central beaches that makes for the perfect place to spend some time relaxing with friends or family.

If a day at the beach isn’t for you, another great place to spend some time if the weather is nice Is at the Jardin Botanico Atlantico (Botanic Garden) that features 1000’s of plants, many water features and lots to take in.

The rugged cliffs and coastline that the north of Spain is fame for is an attractions in its own right and this can be enjoyed at a number of places such as the Mirador Parque de la Providencia and the Santa Catalina headland.

There are a number of museums an indoor attractions for days when the weather may not be at its best including the Termos Romanas de Campo Valdes, the Museu del Pueblo d’Asturies and the BIOPARC aquarium.

For many it is simply strolling around the city centre, enjoying some of the local food and drink before walking along the cities promenade and enjoying the sea views makes for a relaxing day onshore.

Gijon Shorex

Many of the shore excursions offered by the major cruise lines calling into the port are simply guided tours of the city, which can be the best option for those unfamiliar with Spanish cities or for those with mobility concerns as Gijon is a large city but without a major metro system.

For those wanting to head away from the city, there are also a number of options that are generally offered with a trip to nearby historic city of Video amongst the most popular.

Best Time To Visit

Although Gijon can be visited on cruises all year around, it is certainly the most popular in the main April to October cruising season out of the UK, with regards to the number of itineraries offering a stop there.

If a day at the beach in Gijon sounds good to you, it is arguably best to visit in July when the weather is almost at its warmest but the beaches are quieter than August but if you are wanting to simply take in the sites and attractions of the city, most of which are outside and take some walking to take in, it is arguable that the best time to visit are May/June or September when the weather is still nice but it is much more comfortable for waking around the city streets.

Transport

For the size of the city, the public transportation is relatively poor with only buses or any possible use to visitors but there is often the opportunity to make use of tourist buses such as hop-on-hop-off buses.

Gijon Cruises From UK

If you are wanting to visit the Spanish city of Gijon on a cruise directly from the UK, the great news is that not only can you do just that, but there are lots of choices in doing so.

From cruises to the Iberian Peninsula to cruises heading south to the Canaries and from budget cruises lines to luxury ones and from the largest and modernist ships to smaller and older ones to everything in between, holidaymakers heading to Gijon from these shores can choose to visit in the way they want to and heading where they want to go.

Gijon Cruise From Southampton

If you would like to cruise to Gijon from the United Kingdom, we would recommend searching for cruises leaving the port of Southampton as it is the UK’s leading cruise port when it comes to offering itineraries, lines, and ships heading to Gijon.
