Since then, it has retained a European look and feel but has also developed its own culture to make for a unique place to visit that is both familiar and different at the same time for most visitors, especially hose heading there from across the Atlantic in Europe.
From a cruising point of view, the country has two main cruise ports of call for those wanting to visit there, including its main port in its capital city of Montevideo.
Its central location makes it a popular one for those exploring the region and its closeness to the large turnaround port of Buenos Aires in Argentina makes it a popular country for cruise lines sailing in South America.
Although an often overlooked country when it comes to cruise holidays in South America, its tourist industry has really started to increase over the last decade or so, with many heading there to take advantage of its warm climate, safer streets and great port location when compared to many other countries in the region.

Uruguay has a long history, going back over 13,000 when it is though hunter gathers first established themselves there, but the modern country of Uruguay really started to develop when European explorers reached it in 1516, although colonisation took longer than other nearby countries.
That led to local tribes not been able to establish themselves lie they had in Argentina and Brazil and sadly, much of their culture has been lost.
Both Portugal and Spain fought over the country and its culture nowadays takes from both of those powers despite securing its independence between 1811 and 1828 and it formally becoming an independent state in 1830.
