Newcastle Cruise Port
The cruise port on the Tyne is located just a few short miles from the centre of Newcastle but it is easily reached via public transport and via road.
Capable of hosting up to 2 ships at a time and around 2,000 passengers at a time, the range of cruises available from the port is increasing year on year with bigger and bigger ships operating in and out of Newcastle making the port ideal for those living in the North East of England as well as the central belt of Scotland and Yorkshire.
The port is large but mostly used as commercial docks rather than passenger ones although there are daily ferry services to Amsterdam and the infrastructure is constantly been developed for cruise passengers.
Cruise Lines
Whilst more and more cruise lines use the port as a stopping off destination there is also a growing number of cruise lines using the port as a departure port.
Local favourite Fred Olsen and Marella Cruises offer the largest number of options from the port with Marella offering that big ship and all-inclusive experience.
Destinations
Whilst the majority of cruise destinations are towards the north, there is now more choice than ever with a number of cruises heading south for a sunny getaway.
Popular choices including the Norwegian Fjords, the Baltics, Iceland and the Canary Islands.
Location
The Port of Tyne, the main port for the city of Newcastle, is located on the River Tyne around 9 miles from the centre of Newcastle and 9 miles from the North Sea.
Terminals
There are 2 passenger terminals at the Port of Tyne. The first one is on the south side of the river at South Shields and this is the terminal used for ferry passengers whilst cruise ships dock at Northumbrian Quay on the north side of the river.
The terminal is called the Port of Tyne International Passenger Terminal and whilst that is a bit of a mouthful it does make it easy to make sure you are at the right place.
The terminal is capable of hosting around 2000 passengers and offers all that you need for pre-boarding including seating, a café and internet access.
Parking
There is a large car park just a short walk from the cruise terminal.
Transport
The cruise terminal at the Port of Tyne can easily be reached via air, road and rail due to been located just outside of the city of Newcastle.
The terminal is around a 35 minutes’ drive/taxi ride from Newcastle Airport whilst you can also use the cities metro system which operates from the airport to near the port.
For those arriving via rail, the port is around a 20 minute taxi ride from the cities mainline train station, which offers regular services to most parts of the England and Scotland, whilst you can of course connect to the nearby station on the cities metro system from the railway station.
For those arriving via road, the port can easily be reached from all parts of the country via the A1.
