Bosnia and Herzegovina Cruise Holiday Guide

Neum, Bosnia and Herzegovina

The Balkan country of Bosnia and Herzegovina may not instantly come to mind as a cruise holiday destination but after years of instability, it is starting to develop as a tourist destination.

Much of that is built around its historic capital city of Sarajevo but there is a small stretch of coastline, around 12 miles (20km) in length, that is on the Adriatic Sea.

On that coast is the port town of Neum and it is there that all cruise ships that visit the country visit but the number of lines that choose to visit the country is still incredibly small.

Neum itself has a warm summer climate and some beautiful sandy beaches that have helped it develop a burgeoning tourist industry and it also acts as a gateway for visitors to the nearby Mostar and its iconic bridge.

Cruises To Bosnia and Herzegovina

Cruise Holidays To Bosnia and Herzegovina

Although the country’s cruise port sits on the hugely popular cruising region of the Adriatic Sea/Balkans, Bosnia does sit in the shadow of its neighbours.

Both Montenegro and Croatia offer hugely popular cruise destinations including Dubrovnik and Kotor but if you do come across an itinerary calling into Bosnia and Herzegovina, it is well worth it.

This cruise guide gives you all of the information that you need to decide whether visiting Bosnia on a cruise holiday is right for you or not, but this page is an overview of the country as a whole.

Cruise Ports In Bosnia and Herzegovina

Cruises To Neum
Neum
Neum is the only cruise port in the country and whilst it is a holiday resort in its own right with beautiful beaches and a number of historic sites, most visitors will head inland to either the capital of Sarajevo or to the idyllic Mostar.

Neum is located is a small region of Bosnia that splits Croatia, just to the north of Dubrovnik and to the south of Split.

Popular Cruise Lines

The limited number of ships that call into the country each season means that those wanting to visit Bosnia will more than likely have to look at smaller cruise lines such as Fred Olsen.

Bosnia and Herzegovina is located in the south-east of Europe, in the Balkan region that is perhaps just as famous for its instability as it is for its history, culture and natural beauty.

Thankfully, that is something that is starting to change as the Adriatic Sea becomes one of Europe’s most popular cruising areas and the Balkans offers several the most popular ports.

Unfortunately, Bosnia hasn’t quite developed its tourist industry when compared to its neighbours but it is something that continues to improve.

Also known as Bosnia-Herzegovina or simply as Bosnia, the country is well known but perhaps its towns, cities and holiday resorts are not.

That has hopefully changed for you thanks to this guide and our in-depth guide to the port town of Neum but in the main it does mean the country gets over-looked when potential holidaymakers are searching for getaways in the region.

Sarajevo is the countries capital and is full of history, but it was also sadly badly damaged in the 90’s during the breakup of Yugoslavia whilst the beautiful Mostar is one of the hidden gems of the Balkans and is well worth the bus journey to get there from the cruise port.

Best Time To Visit

The main cruising season in the Adriatic is from April to October but the weather can be quite ‘changeable’ in the early and late parts of that.

The summer months do often see warm temperatures and blue skies but a resort such as Neum also attracts holidaymakers from across the region looking for a beach getaway.

With that in mind we would recommend visiting in either June or early July or early September to make the most of the weather and to avoid the crowds not just in Bosnia and Herzegovina but also in the pother ports you will visit.

Sadly, it can be a case of ‘whenever a cruise ship docks there’ as to when the best time to visit is.

Here at CruiseHols.co.uk we bring you all of the information you will ever need to choose the right cruise destination for you and your family.

Our destination guides include everything from ports to attractions and excursion to the positives and negatives of the destination.

Bosnia and Herzegovina Cruises From The UK

If you are wanting to sail to Bosnia and Herzegovina directly from the United Kingdom, it is possible but you will have to be incredibly flexible in when you can sail and also have plenty of spare time.

That is because a cruise from the UK will take any where from 20-30 days to sail to the Adriatic, visit ports such as Dubrovnik and Venice and then call into Neum before sailing back through the Western Mediterranean and back to the United Kingdom.

These trips only happen a handful of times a year and will usually be on smaller and older ships.

Bosnia and Herzegovina Cruises From Southampton

If a cruise itinerary does appear for direct cruises to Bosnia, it will more than likely be from the UK leading cruise port of Southampton.

Cruises to Bosnia from Southampton are hard to come by and will need some planning on your part but if you prefer not to fly to ports such as Athens, Civitavecchia (Rome) or Ravenna that offer many more cruise itineraries of the Adriatic Sea and across south-eastern Europe.
