The port has 8 cruise terminals and 15 berths, so as you would expect, it can often be a busy port of call especially when full of larger ships.
The port is located centrally in the city but due to the ports size, you will need to take a shuttle bus to the city centre, from where the Civitavecchia train station can be easily reached for those wanting to head off an explore on their own.

If you prefer not to travel in Rome or if you only have a short period ashore, there are a few sites of interest to enjoy in the city of Civitavecchia including the Civitavecchia fort that almost greets all visitors at the end of the main cruise ship pier.
The historic Forte Michelangelo was commissioned by Pope Julius II to defend to port and it take sits name from the fact that Michelangelo designed the upper part of the Mascio tower.
In the Ficoncella part of the city, there are the Terme Taurine ancient Roman baths which are still used to today.
